If your child will be a car rider, please follow the red path in the picture. Turn on Pacific St., go all the way down to the second stop sign, turn left back on OG and file in line. Please do not sit at the stop sign. If the line is past the stop sign, turn right and turn around in stadium parking lot.

Car rider line begins moving at 7:20 am. Parents will need to go through the line. Staff and student leaders will assist with getting students to classes.

Dear Port Barre Elementary Families,

We are excited to roll out our new, streamlined communication tool that will allow you to message directly with your child’s teachers. This new feature, called Rooms, is available right inside our district’s app, the SLP App.

This will be our primary tool for parent-teacher communication this year, replacing previous methods. To make sure you’re ready, please follow the steps below.

How to Get Connected:

Download the App: Your single point for communication is the SLP App. If you haven't already, please download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store by searching for "St. Landry Parish Schools" or using the download links provided below:

iPhone- https://apps.apple.com/us/app/st-landry-parish-school-board/id1531513981

Android-https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apptegy.stlandry&pli=1

Sign Up (Only If You Haven't Already):

Open the SLP App and tap on the Rooms icon.

Follow the prompts to create your account and connect with your student(s).

Important: If you already signed up at the end of last school year or over the summer, you do not need to do it again. You are all set!

Troubleshooting & Support:

"I'm signed in, but I don't see my student."
If your student is not connected to your account after you sign in, please use the messaging feature within Rooms to let us know, and we will resolve it.

"I'm having trouble creating my account or signing in."
If you are experiencing technical difficulty with the sign-up process itself, please contact our dedicated support by emailing tfontenot3@slpsb.org.

Please note that student schedules will not be available in the app until after your child’s school has released rosters at open house or orientation/registration.

We are confident that Rooms will make staying connected simpler and more effective than ever. We look forward to a great year of partnership with you!

📣 Please see the attached Check-Out Policy 📄

📚 Did you know? Research shows that attendance is a key factor in student success. Every minute counts—late check-ins and early check-outs can impact learning just as much as full-day absences.

🎯 Help us reach our weekly attendance goal and support your child’s achievement by minimizing time away from school.

đŸ’Ș Let’s work together to make every day—and every moment—matter!

Supervise your child's online activity

To help keep your child safe online, monitor digital media use and consider establishing these rules: Devices are used in the open, not behind closed doors. No posting identifying information, such as location or school name. No arranging real-life meetings with online "friends."No downloading apps or files without permission. No secrets; your child must tell you about scary, hurtful or upsetting things seen online.

Help your child divide and conquer compound words

Recognizing different types of words helps children learn to read and spell them. To help your child learn about compound words (words made by linking two words together, such as "schoolwork") look through reading material for 10 of them. Together, break down each word into its two parts. Then, discuss the meanings of the parts. How do they relate to the meaning of the compound word?

Add math skills to your grocery shopping list

On your next trip to the grocery store, help your child pick up some math skills while you pick up food. For example, you can challenge your elementary schooler to estimate your total grocery bill. In the checkout line, call out the price of each item as it is scanned. Have your child round it up or down to the nearest dollar, then add it mentally to a running total. How close can your child come to the actual bill?

Practice reading everywhere you go

Sounding out every word on a page can take so much mental energy your child may not have enough left to understand the meaning of the text. To help your child gain reading fluency, take books along wherever you go. Then, read with your child while waiting in line or before a doctor's appointment. Have your child read favorite books and poems again and again. You can also take turns reading, sentence by sentence.

Student responsibility has many parts

What makes a student responsible? Many things, including honesty, courage and self-control. Teach honesty by making it a family habit to admit mistakes, learn from them, apologize and move on. Encourage standing up for what is right by role-playing what to do in tough situations. Then, foster self-control by helping your child learn to weigh the pros and cons of possible actions.
